Who may qualify?

For VAT purposes, you may qualify if you:

• have a physical or mental impairment that has a long-term and substantial effect on your ability to carry out everyday activities;
• have a condition that the medical profession treats as a chronic sickness; or
• are terminally ill.

You do not qualify based on age alone, or for a temporary condition such as a broken leg.

Which products qualify?

VAT relief is available only on qualifying goods supplied to an eligible customer. Many mobility scooters designed for disabled people may qualify, but eligibility can depend on the scooter’s classification and design. Accessories and replacement parts do not automatically qualify.

How does VAT relief work?

1. Choose your product. Select the mobility scooter that meets your needs.
2. Confirm product eligibility. We will explain whether VAT relief may apply to that product.
3. Complete a declaration. You will be asked to provide a simple written declaration confirming your eligibility and intended personal or domestic use.
4. Buy without VAT. If the customer and product meet the conditions, VAT will not be charged on the qualifying purchase.

VAT relief is applied at the time of purchase; it is not normally a refund claimed from HMRC afterwards.

What information will I need?

The eligibility declaration will normally ask for your name, address and a brief description of your long-term illness or disability. It will also confirm that the goods are being purchased for your own personal or domestic use.
