Mobility Scooter Won't Turn On? 5 Quick Fixes

You turn the key on your mobility scooter, but nothing happens—the lights won't come on, or the dashboard flashes and beeps continuously. Before you assume your scooter is broken or call an engineer, don't panic!

In most cases, a scooter that won't drive is caused by a simple safety feature doing its job. Here are Movara Mobility's 5 quick checks to get your vehicle moving again in under two minutes.

1. Check the Freewheel Lever (The #1 Culprit) ⚙️

At the back of your scooter near the rear wheels, there is a small manual lever that allows you to push the vehicle by hand.

  • The Problem: If this lever is in "Freewheel" mode, the motor is mechanically disconnected. The scooter will not drive, and the dashboard will usually beep.
  • The Quick Fix: Turn the key OFF. Push the lever firmly into "Drive" mode until it clicks. Turn the key back ON.

2. Unplug the Battery Charger 🔌

Mobility scooters have an internal safety lock that prevents the vehicle from driving while plugged in.

  • The Quick Fix: Ensure the charger lead is completely unplugged from your scooter's charging socket. Close the rubber charging socket cap securely.

3. Don't Touch the Throttle Wig-Wag When Turning the Key ✋

If your fingers press or pull the throttle lever while turning the ignition key, the safety computer detects a "wig-wag fault" and locks out the motor to prevent sudden jumps.

  • The Quick Fix: Take your hands completely off the handlebars. Turn the key OFF. Wait 10 seconds, then turn the key back ON without touching any levers.

4. Check the Battery Pack Seating & Key Barrel 🔑

On travel boot scooters, the battery box unclips for easy lifting into car boots.

  • The Quick Fix: Push down firmly on top of the battery box to ensure the metal contact pins at the bottom are clicked securely into place. Make sure your ignition key is pushed all the way in before turning.

5. Press the Circuit Breaker Reset Button 🔘

If your scooter drove over a high kerb or carried a heavy load up a steep hill, the circuit breaker button may have popped out to protect the motor from overheating.

  • The Quick Fix: Look for a small red or black button located near the battery box or lower chassis. Push it firmly back in to reset the circuit.
