Mobility Scooter Ramps & Door Widths: BS 8300 Home Access Guide

Buying a mobility scooter brings incredible outdoor freedom, but getting your vehicle safely inside your home, porch, or outdoor garden shed can present unexpected physical barriers. High door thresholds, narrow door frames, and steep entrance steps can prevent seamless access or even cause underbody grounding if the ramp angle is miscalculated.

In this technical home access guide, Movara Mobility explains British Standard BS 8300 ramp gradient ratios, measuring clear door opening widths, selecting threshold ramps, and preventing chassis grounding.

Quick Home Access Rules

  • Maximum Gradient Ratio (1:12 Rule): Under UK access guidelines, the maximum recommended ramp slope for independent scooter driving is 1:12 (1 inch of rise for every 12 inches of ramp length).
  • Minimum Doorway Clearance: Standard interior doors measure 762 mm (30 inches), but heavy-duty Class 3 scooters often require a minimum clear opening width of 800 mm to 850 mm.
  • Rubber Threshold Wedges: Doorway lip thresholds up to 50 mm (2 inches) high should be bridged using modular rubber threshold ramps to avoid damaging underbody motor casings.
  • Ground Clearance Check: Ensure your scooter's central ground clearance (typically 50 mm–100 mm) exceeds the breakover angle of portable folding ramps.

1. Calculating Ramp Length & Gradient Ratios (BS 8300)

Select a ramp that is too short for your step height, and the resulting angle will cause the front wheels to lift, trip motor circuit breakers, or tip the vehicle backward.

Total Step Height (Rise) Minimum Length (1:12 Ideal Gradient) Minimum Length (1:8 Max Occupied Slope) Recommended Ramp Type
150 mm (6 Inches / 1 Step) 1,800 mm (6 Feet) 1,200 mm (4 Feet) Single-fold suit-case ramp
300 mm (12 Inches / 2 Steps) 3,600 mm (12 Feet) 2,400 mm (8 Feet) Telescopic channel or roll-up ramp
450 mm (18 Inches / 3 Steps) 5,400 mm (18 Feet) 3,600 mm (12 Feet) Permanent modular aluminium ramp system

2. Doorway Clear Opening Widths & Mirror Clearance

When measuring door frames, do not measure between the door stops alone. Calculate the effective clear opening width from the inner edge of the door frame to the face of the door when opened at 90 degrees:

  1. Compact Boot Scooters: Overall width usually measures 480 mm to 520 mm. Fits through standard 762 mm (30") interior doors easily.
  2. Class 2 Mid-Size Pavement Scooters: Overall width measures 550 mm to 620 mm. Requires a clear door opening of at least 700 mm to allow hand clearance on side tillers.
  3. Class 3 Heavy-Duty Road Scooters: Overall width measures 650 mm to 720 mm (including mirrors). May require double doors, wide uPVC patio doors, or garage access.

3. Overcoming Door Thresholds: Bridge vs Rubber Wedges

PVD and uPVC door tracks feature raised weather lips designed to repel rainwater. Driving a heavy scooter directly over an unbridged 2-inch threshold can misalign front steering tracking or smash lower motor housing plastic.

  • Rubber Threshold Ramp Wedges: Dense recycled rubber ramps positioned flush against the threshold inside and outside. Supports heavy loads up to 500 kg quietly without moving.
  • Aluminium Bridge Ramps: Two-sided hinged aluminium plates that arch over raised uPVC door tracks, distributing vehicle weight evenly so door seals are not crushed.
